I have a 3.8ghz core 2 quad processor, 8 gigs of ram, and a 8800gt in the old girl currently.

I am debating on whether or not I want to spend the money upgrading this into a gaming rig capable of playing modern games on high settings at 1366x768 rez at 30fps and up. I do not want to spend more than 200 bucks but would be willing to go as high as 300.

I am assuming I need a new motherboard, new processor, new graphics card... okay, at this point it is sounding like I should just buy a ps3 to get my gaming fix until the ps4 has some more titles but just for the sake of argument, is it possible to take my old girl back to where she used to be? I used to rage on fallout 3 when it first game out and would like to do that with say crysis 3 and metro 2033.

well the core 2 quad is ok for gaming and it wont need upgrading if your on a tight budget it is equivalent to a new i3 ish so it will be fine, 8gb of RAM will be plenty. I would suggest upgrading the GPU to something a bit better and what currency are you buying the GPU in like AU USD etc but for that kind of money you can get something for $150 ish and get an SSD for boot maybe to bring it up to speed.
