Hey all,

I've recently bought an Acer Aspire V3-772G-9829 Laptop that came with Windows 8. I've upgraded it to Windows 8.1 from the Windows Store. I also own a custom built desktop that runs on Windows 8.1 as well.

Here are their Specs :

Laptop :

Processor : 4th Gen Intel Core i7-4702MQ

RAM : 8GB DDR3 @ 1600MHz

Graphics : 4GB Nvidia GeForce GT 750M

HD : Toshiba 1TB (5400 RPM)

Desktop :

Processor : 2nd Gen Intel Core i7-2600K

RAM : 12GB DDR3 @ 1333MHz

Graphics : 2GB Nvidia Geforce GTX 770 from Zotac

HD : Seagate 500GB (7200 RPM)

Well, I've been facing a strange problem. Both my computers wont shut down completely. This doesn't happen all the time. But suddenly/randomly, this happens and they wont shut down completely. What I mean by 'fully turn off' is that when I go to the charms bar and go to power and click shut down, the PC will say "Shutting down" to turn off the screen but the case light, cpu fan, hdd and psu are still going. The same goes for the laptop as well. The screen turns off but the system is still running. The power button still keeps glowing.

To make matters worse, mashing keys on the keyboard/mouse and or pressing the power button don't affect this situation. It's only until I fully hold down the power button that it decides to completely turn off.

I've been in the "choose what the power buttons do" page, turned the "fast start-up" setting off etc and there is no change. I've also 'googled' my problem but seem to only get "turn 'fast start-up' off". Apparently, its not the solution to this problem. After a lot of Googling, I came to the conclusion that it wasn't just me, a lot of Windows users are facing the same problem.

And one of my friends has told me that this must be a problem with a Registry entry that checks the hard drive when I try to shut down. He also said that this must be present in the Scheduled tasks or something. He has asked me to check this page.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/831426/en-us

But the thing is, when I go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager in the registry, I don't find the folder that says BootExecute. So how exactly should I resolve this issue?

Solution
You won't like my solution but this happened to my new Toshiba laptop couple weeks ago. Tried reinstalling windows 8 from scratch as well as reinstalling from the recovery disk, resetting the bios, power options and other things. I'm a computer pro since mid 80's and couldn't figure it out and posted the problem and no real answers. Someone in Europe had the same exact problem recently.

After countless hours playing with it, returned it to the store and they gave me another one.

Sorry...

First thing I'd do (and I ain't no expert)...is do a health check on the machines, check the Device Manager for any conflicts, check the Windows event logs for any clues. If it's not shutting down because it can't close a programme might be worth checking what processes are running after you've closed down all your applications, see if anything sticks out, see if anything is hogging system resources, and on that front, just check the task manger and performance.

After that I'd be thinking about a clean re-install, keeping no files (backing them up to a separate drive first of course). Then on a clean build with none of your apps installed, I'd try your shutdowns and health checks again. If all ok, then install your apps one at a time and repeat the above checks...

i think, the usb sockets not powering up properly from suspend when a system shutdown command is initiated. Disable the USB selective suspended setting and check if it solves the issue. HEre is how to do it...

Open your Power Options

then Click on Change Plan Setting

on the next screen, click on Change advanced power settings

A new power options window will open, in which scroll down to USB Settings and Expand it by clicking the Plus sign... now expand, USB selective suspended setting and in the options, select Disabled for both on battery and plugged in....

Hope it helps

Thank you guys, But as I said, I too cant say anything for sure... For Example, Fred Anderson has suggested a method which I did follow, but I cant test it because this doesnt happen all the time... This happens randomly/suddenly...

Everything has been fine for the past two days, but I am not sure that it wont happen in the future, because I tried many things which seemed to solve the problem, but after a week or so, it happened again...

The thing is, when I click on shut down, I cant say for sure that my system will shut down... It may or may not...

But guys, Really, Thanx a lot for the effort, and hope Microsoft seriously takes some action and comes up with an update that solves this issue..

Thanx a lot... :D

I had a problem like this with an Acer Aspire v5. When i shut down the screen goes off, but the pc (keyboard lights included) still running for like 10 minutes.

Here's the solution i found.

When i buyed the pc, it was Windows 8 with Windows 8 drivers. Then i updated Windows to 8.1, but don't hae updated the drivers.

I downloaded new driers for Windows 8.1, installed all, and....

Txarammm, now it shutdowns in 1 minute or less.

Hope this works for you too.
