Realtek High Definition Audio - Speaker Properties keep resetting themselves, causing poor audio quality

Hi everyone, I just bought at Toshiba Satellite laptop with Windows 8 today, and I've encountered a problem with audio.

When using headphones, the audio seemed really flat and quiet to me, so I went to control panel, change system sounds, and fiddled with my speakers. The speakers are "Realtek High Definition Audio." I selected the speakers and clicked "properties." I then went to "enhancements" and clicked "disable all sound effects." Upon clicking this, the sound became so much better, and I thought that I had fixed it.

Unfortunately, whenever I refresh the music I'm listening to or choose a new song, the sound goes back to the original quality and I have to repeat this process. It still says that the sound effects are disabled, but the sound quality is no good until I uncheck and then recheck the box.

Does anyone know how to prevent this setting from resetting itself?

Also, one interesting note, my headphones are shown as speakers and not headphones in the sound, playback tab.

Same problem here with Toshiba Satellite and Windows 8.1. I updated the Realtek drivers but it didn't work. The sound enhancements activate when song changes although they appear disabled in the audio properties.
