Slow speed going through Dlink router

Hello there, So I have a DIR-655 connect through a motorola SURFboard 6180 modem for my cable internet I just got. I have 20 down and 3 up. Now if I wire directly to the modem I get 21 down 3 up approx with 30 ping. If I go through the router it's like 15 down and 1.9 up with 120 ping. Any ideas why?

When you switch between connected directly to the modem to the router, are you unplugging power on both, then plugging in the modem first then the router?

Routers will add a "little" bit of traffic to your connection, but nothing that should make any difference.

Check your speeds at different times through the day and week as traffic on the web can affect speeds. Also try different servers to check from.
