Right so... I have been thinking if you could have a Xeon CPU with a i7. Both are socket 2011 on a dual CPU mobo. Just wondering...

Any help appriciated

Solution
Only xeons and opterons. You could always network multiple pcs together depending on the purpose. Why are you wanting to do this?

Is there any other cpu that can run in conjunction with another cpu EXCEPT Xeon? and is there dual cpu mobos for AMD CPUs such as athlon (FM2, FM3+?) from amd not including Opteron

Long, long ago there were dual-processor motherboards for chips other than Xeons. (e.g., 486es, Pentium Pros)

One other thing changes when You move to a Xeon chip. Most of the time, You have to ditch Your non-ECC DIMMS for ECC DIMMs.

You do not need ecc on any lga 1155, 1150, or 2011 xeon which covers current gen and a couple previous. There is more to that list but it's easy to look up.

Back then there wasn't any market segmenting and pentium pro can be considered "xeon" before they began using the term as it was meant for servers and workstations as xeons are. All these names are just marketing and there is a lot more market segmentation nowadays.

The memory controller is on the cpu for the last couple of gens. It does not necessarily depend on mobo. Even though the mobo may not say ecc/non ecc support it may still support it because the connections are the same. Similar to how some mobo manufacturers don't list xeon support even though they still work because it's the same micro code as the i series. I'm not saying they are all the same, just that there are cases like the e3 series. Although it's best to find a mobo that does state support which is why I'd suggest a workstation/server board or asrock consumer chipsets will usually list support for xeons and ecc.
