Hi guys,

I need some advice regarding the power supply of my soon to be delivered ASUS R9280X-DC2T-3GD5 video card (http://www.alternate.co.uk/ASUS/R9280X-DC2T-3GD5/html/product/1104132/?). I bought a completely new desktop system along with it from a different supplier. The salesman in the shop convinced me a Cooler Master Silent Pro M II 520W would suffice for my system (see below), but internet seems to tell me a 650W power supply is required. What do you guys think? I am far from an expert unfortunately...

System:
- Asus Z87-C,s1150
- Corsair Vengeance LP 1600-8GB
- Intel Core i5-4440 ,s1150
- Samsung 840 EVO 120 GB (SSD)
- Seagate Desktop HDD 1TB
- ASUS R9280X-DC2T-3GD5

Solution
At most (i.e. if something managed to fully stress every single component in your PC) you'd still be using less than 500W so yes I think 520 would certainly suffice.. Often we tend to overestimate how much wattage we really use (sites as well), as observed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiWThqgFfI4

To accommodate pretty much anything else you may put in the PC (except for Crossfire) you could instead get a 550W PSU from some more reputable manufacturers, like:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341022

The Core i5-4440 (along will the entire 4th gen) supports an extra low idle power mode that you can only take advantage of with a Haswell...

a lot of recommendations are based on inflated power requirements for GPU's, which manufacturers seem to do so people will have extra power instead of not quite enough...You're probably just fine with a good 500W (though i wouldn't get a CM), but i would get something will a little more for later expansion and so you're not running the PSU hot and hard all the time.

Thank you all for the quick replies! Based on your suggestions I'll go for a different brand and somewhat higher power. The store were I also bought the rest of my system offer the options listed below, which one is do you recommend? I prefer buying in the same place if possible, unless these PSU's are also poor.

Corsair CSM 650W
Corsair RM 650W
OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W

The Core i5-4440 (along will the entire 4th gen) supports an extra low idle power mode that you can only take advantage of with a Haswell ready PSU and I myself own and love one such PSU by OCZ.. so I'd prefer to go with the OCZ option above. Other OCZ options available here: http://ocz.com/consumer/psu/intel-haswell-ready-psu

But, if we're just talking about just power, yes you're set with a 520W.

Update: The OCZ 700W you listed will support your CPU's low power mode and will ready you for crossfire should you decide to go that route in the future but it will be overkill if you don't crossfire (not build-breaking but lots of potential wasted). The 650RM doesn't support the extra low power mode but will be quite sufficient for your power needs.. it's also GOLD Plus certified and fully modular.. pros and cons to each but both good choices.

I think I'll go for the Corsair RM 650W then. Does the extra low idle power mode have any use when mining litecoins with the gpu? If so, I might switch to the OCZ instead to save some electricity. My guess is that some CPU usage is required while mining thus rendering this feature obsolete in my case as it will be running almost 24/7.

OCZ is in Bankruptcy proceedings, I'd wait till the dust settles (for warranty, etc) before I'd purchase any OCZ
or their subsid PC Pwr & Cooling products.
