I want to backup my business computer, which contains private client financial data to a external hard drive on my home network as a offsite backup. I am considering buying a WD Mycloud so I can connect it directly to my router and not need a PC powered on.

Data transfers over the internet will be secure buy my main concern is, what can I do to protect the data on the drive if it is physically stolen?

I have not researched much but I assume there are encryption programs out there that will encrypt and password protect a drive but If I did that to a NAS drive like this would that not block or erase all of the built-in NAS software?

Thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions.

The programs available can work at the folder and file levels too, not just the whole drive. You'll need 2 or three of these drives sop that one is always off-site. Leaving it in your house doesnt qualify as off-site.

How are you protecting that data in your PC?

My business computer is not at my home and is much more secure. It currently has a local backup to a external harddrive locked in a heavy duty closet and online.

My fear for storing a backup in my home is that if I am robbed (which thankfully I never have) my business could suffer as well. I am looking for some sort of security to a NAS drive that does not require a computer to be running.
