I7 3770k Core Temperatures

I have searched around about the core temperatures for the i7 3770k and when I should get worried, but everywhere I look I am getting information to do with socket temperatures. I only monitor the core's temperatures as I my motherboards socket readings seem to be dodgy and I can't seem to find any software that uses the socket anyway. My cores temperatures appear to be ok right now, with lows of 25 degrees C at idle and highs of 67 at load on a cold day and 77 in the summer. I use a Noctua NH-D14, would you say these temps are normal for a cooler of that standard? I do have a pretty warm room.

I have been thinking of overclocking for a while now and have tested it with the intel utility a few times in the past to see what temps I get with more power. The only thing I want to know is, at what temperature should I worry? Also, at what temp would you recommend I stick too (out of safety). I stress at what core temperature, sockets temps are useless to me. Thanks in advance for replies and I apologise if this information is in fact somewhere out there on these forums, but I could not find it myself.

how are you cooling the cpu? if it's the stock cooler than i would invest in a all in one water cooler like the corsair h100i which monitors your temps and fan speed. your temps seem a tad bit high to me since your not overclocked, i run a 3570k at 4.4 and top out around 75c so stock at 77c seems high. if your using after market cooling you ought to reapply thermal paste and test again with intel burn test for stability and temps. i'd say try to keep your temps at or around 75-78c overclocked and at load, that way you don't really risk any damage, although the thermal limit is 110c if i'm not mistaken. good luck!

Yeah I updated my post about 2 minutes after I did it with what cooling I use, must have just missed you ^^

I use a Noctua NH-D14 with arctic silver 5. I haven't had a reading of 77 in a long time, but I assume it is because it is winter. The max I get at load right now is 67. NH-D14 provides similar cooling to the h100i from what I have read, as I was thinking of getting one about 6 months back, but changed my mind after researching it's performance against the noctua's.

It seems my intel extreme tuning utility no longer works, this is going to make things a lot harder. The program appears to open, but is invisible on my screen. Uninstalled and got new version, same problem. Seems I will need to address this problem before I get back to thinking about overclocking my CPU. Damn unreliable software.

Well if your loading your CPU with a utility then yes 70-80c is normal for the 3770k even with the Noctua. Ivy runs hot that's the way it is no way around it unless you want to de-lid, you temps look perfectly fine to me.

This could take a while, not finding any results as to why this program is not running so far and my solutions have all failed. I will get back to you when I have the software running properly again PCDave. Thanks for replying, but I have a feeling this will have to wait until tomorrow as by the time I get the utility working it will most likely be time to get some sleep. I will get you the temps with them programs as soon as I can, for now it's off the the software forums unfortunately.

Alright, thank you and yes I would like for you to test it with the software I provided you above. Id just recommend Prime95 instead, its a stressor as well and is the same, if not better than the intel CPU stress tester.

I am having a late night anyway it seems. I wasn't aware Prime95 did the stress test, my bad. I ran it and my cores were sitting at 69 for the majority of the 7 minutes. They each peaked at core1:64, core 2:71, core 3:71 and core 4:69. Bare in mind this is winter when my room isn't as hot. I expect peaks of 78ish in the summer time. Any recommendations as far as overclocking?

yeah the noctua is pretty awesome for air, looks amazing too! i'd start small and bump to 4.0 without altering voltage than testing, if it fails bump it slightly (if under 1.1 than to 1.1) after the bump do prime95 or ibt and see what happens. again if it's getting hot than try applying new thermal paste just to hedge your bets!

Alright I got the program working FINALLY! I just ran a stress test with stock frequency and none of the cores touched 70 degrees. I upped the frequency to 3.682 non-turbo and 4.103 w/ turbo and ran the test again. The cores maxed at 63, 69, 68, 66. I noticed during the test that the processor frequency was only at 3.89 even though it was set to be 4.103 at boost. Should it not automatically go up to 4.1 when at 100% capacity? That is how I thought the K series worked...

so those temps are absolutely better, and yes, you should change your voltage a little bit, go into your bios and change cpu voltage from auto and bump it slightly from there as needed. run intel burn test to check for stability and up voltage when it crashes. i personally have a 3570k running at 4.4 with voltage at 1.125 and i pass ibt with temps not breaking 70c. good luck!
