Buy a second HD 6950 and SSD, or upgrade to R9 280x?

Specs:
8 GB Ram 1600
FX 6300 @ 3.8 Ghz
2 TB Hard Drive 7200 rpm
VisionTech HD 6950 1 GB model
Asus M5A97 LE R 2.0
Crappy power supply (getting replaced regardless)

I've noticed on some of the newish games, my computer is a bit slugish. I've built it within the last year and was on a tight budget. I am STILL on a budget. So, which would yield a better result, spending $300 (after selling my old 6950) on the R9 280x, or spending $100 on a gently used 6950 and spending $150 on an SSD.

I've never X-fired before, does it work well? AND, can I crossfire two different HD 6950's one with 2 GB of ram and one with 1 GB of ram.

I realize that the 280x is more 'future proof' because it can be x-fired later, but, that isn't really a consideration. Much more interested in getting more performance now for the next 18 months or so.

Solution
I would have suggested a 7950/7970 but those have all but dried up due to bitcon miner about 1 month ago those models were the best smoking deals out there for around 210-275.

personally i would get the ssd now and wait on getting a graphics card untill you can afford what you want. i also am running a 6950, although its a 2gb. i considered cross-firing myself but dont think at this point its worth the money with the additional features that the new cards have. i personally feel like i would be wasting my money. i love my ssd though and would never go back to a traditional hd!

1gig video cards suck for modern gaming at 1600 resolution or above. that's one of the reasons for your poor performance. I have 2 2gig cards. they run great with the right processors. even cross fired for a while. not worth the money xfiring unless you do it when cards are new........ and even then I don't think it's worth it. by the time most people go to buy a second card there's always a better single card to be had. ................buy a 7950.

You're right! I've been wondering about this. Apparently Bitcoin is dying off, but it has been replaced by Litecoin. Anyhow, I have decided just to wait 3-6 months until the markets cool off and I can get a good card at a decent price. Thanks for your input.
