I posted another thread asking why my games were stuttering. We established that my cpu was overheating (averaging 100C). I am using the generic heatsink that comes with the processor at the moment, and the 3 preinstalled fans that came with the case when I bought it, and nothing else. What should I do to lower my temp?

Solution
1) Clean out any dust inside your case (and fans/heatsink) using a can of compressed air.
2) Remove the heatsink, clean off the old thermal paste (75-90% isopropyl alcohol and lint-free material), reapply paste, and reseat the heatsink (make sure it's dust free while you're at it). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hNgFNH7zhQ
3) Get a new aftermarket CPU cooler - a great one at a great price is the CM Hyper 212 EVO, or the best of the best NH-D14.

If you have had that computer for more than three years with the stock HSF, its retention frame and push-pin clips may have deformed over time and are no longer providing sufficient clamp-down force to achieve adequate heat transfer. If your build is newer than that then you probably misapplied the HSF.

In either case, the "simplest" way to achieve a nearly fool-proof long-term results is to use a HSF with mounting backplate - this eliminates plastic and nylon components along with possible PCB bend over time from the equation.

I'm sorry to ask, but does the microfiber cloth and Isopropyl alcohol come with the CM hyper 212 evo?

No, you'll need to buy it separately.

Ah, ok. I've found all three on amazon (I have a giftcard and prefer newegg), but do these microfiber cloths look ok to you? http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Microfiber-Cleaning-Cloth-Pack/dp/B009FUF6DM/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1387845864&sr=1-2&keywords=microfiber+cloth

Well they're microfibre and lint-free so probably  I personally always use coffee filters, they work great and they're always lying around somewhere.

So one you use to clean glasses would work?

If you are using disposable cloth to clean your glasses, sure. If you use a reusable cloth though, picking up paste with it will ruin it.

Personally, I use plain paper towels. Once the CPU is dry, a simple canned air blast will remove whatever lint the paper towels may have left behind.

Ah, in the video Jook posted it said to stay away from the paper towels. But, the airblast makes sense. Thanks for the response!

Do you think the CM Hyper will definitely cool my CPU down?

If you aren't overclocking, even the stock cooler should be half-decent (70-80C core temperature at full load) when installed properly.

I had the 212+ on my Core2Duo and I liked it a lot: looks decent, has a satisfyingly sturdy mounting mechanism with motherboard back-plate and has one of the highest bang-per-buck on the market. The mounting mechanism can be a little annoying to work with though and the tower is tall enough to become a clearance issue with the side panels on some thinner cases.

The CM Hyper 212 EVO and 4 case fans for my case. That's it atm :p
