Today I just received an Asus M5A97 R2.0 that I ordered.
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131873

On the motherboard The VRM heatsink was detached at one end where it sits on the board - the small plastic spring loaded push pin was broken off and sitting in the static bag. The broken push pin is the one on the inside of the board (not outside edge). It has a part number on it. Is it possible to just order a small item like that, or would you recommend sending it back?

Here's my dilemma. I placed my original order Nov 30th. I accidentally ordered the LE version of the Asus M5A97 R2.0. Newegg was good about returning it, but that original order didn't arrive until Dec 11th, and they said I should wait until then to request the. RMA. It was issued Dec 12th and I ordered the new one immdeiately. It only arrived today Dec 23rd. So if I RMA this one, over the x-mas holidays, it might not arrive until Dec 30th or 31st. Although the original misorder was rec'd back by them on Dec 20th, the person I spoke to today doesn't expect a refund will be issued until Dec 30th. So I am temporarily out of pocket the price of two boards, with the rest of my original order sitting here, unable to build, and now will extend beyond their 30 day return window. As it's x-mas I have no cash left. The shipping on all items has been one clusterf**k after another. Part of the order held in Hamilton on "technical delay", part held in Vancouver on "technical delay", and. another part of the order held in Calgary for four days on "weather delay".

So I'm thinking if I could fix this board by replacing the pin, or at least use it to test the build to POST, I'd know if everything else was OK. Is it alright to do that, just testing to POST, or would the heatsink sitting up cause potential further damage?

If my only option is the RMA route, I'm looking at the first week of January? before I can even test the original build ordered Nov 30th. Soooooooooo frustrating.

you could, but heres the what if part... what if you do that and then somthing goes wrong like the screwdriver slips out of your hand and chinks the board ?? physical damage warrenty void. i dont know i dont return mail order stuff i just chunk it and call it a bad day. ya it blows... its your part to do as you see fit with it i just hope that they dont try to blame you fpr the damage as it is now. its all good with them till the ball is in there court. cause your there and there way over there knowing that you not face to face with them. look at the intel boards that guys claim bent pins and make a jugement on that.. newegg may not honor the damage you got when they see it for them selves.. rember what i said in the first post i...
man i hate that for you.. i would just get it replaced cause if in 3 months your ''fix'' goes bad then were are you?? at least you will get a solid board with out a jackleg fix. seems like good ol newegg is pushing alot of bad parts lately.. my buddy and i been noticing that the past year or so we been getting a few suspect items from them [there not the newegg we grew up with anymore] i think there trying to be too much like am a zon and things are a slipping. my last deal with them was vid card. it took 3 to get one that fully worked right out of the box 1 was doa and one looked like it was used/refurb/open box. and a few outher things over the last year or so. now just reading the reviews there it seem theres alot of that going on with them. this will be the first time i am looking to buy elsewere...so good luck.

Well junkeymonkey, in the last couple of hours I've been sitting here woefully resigning myself to the same conclusion - send it back. As I rec'd an RMA number after calling them, and it's good for seven days, it still leaves the question for me of whether I could just assemble everything to see if everything else is OK. I don't want to miss that 30 day window of return for all the other items. I can't test them without a mobo. My two other machines are laptops. Do you think it's safe to do that, just to POST, or is it not worth it?

I boxed it up, printed out the UPS label, and will ship it back tomorrow morning. You're right that I don't wanna mess this up further. But I'm pissed. I just added it up and I've spent $1204 since the initial order on Black Friday. I saved since July for this. $218 is held by Newegg in potential returns, but it's not cash in hand so I can't re-order today. It's Xmas and I'm tapped. I'm a workin stiff. Based on the timeline for the refund they've given me, and how shipping across country has been, even with express, I probably won't see a mobo till somewhere between Jan 6 to 8th. So what did I learn from this? I gaffed the original order ... my fault. Then it was the shipping delays due to plane mechanical failure in two locations, and the storms on the east coast and central Canada. The ordered lagged into mid December and then it was in the Christmas load. Broken mobo arrived. Is that Newegg shipping a faulty part? ... Purolator damaging it in shipping? ... Asus sending out a faulty part? So everyone can throw there hands in the air and say "not my fault". Who knows. Had I walked 6 blocks down the street and ordered from the shop I've been dealing with for fifteen years I probably would have paid .... I dunno ... maybe $150 more? This is Canada where everything is more expensive. So was it worth the savings? Not really. Had I gone to that shop down the street, even with my gaff I'd have had the build done 1st week of December tops. Lesson learned and I may still have to eat a loss, we'll see. Even if I view this all as not Newegg's fault, which all considered may very well be the case, as a customer I''m waaaaaaaay less than satisfied. The hassle isn't worth the savings. I'll shop local where the service is worth the extra coin.

i feel for ya.. i kinda went through that few months ago with them vid cards all from newegg... heres a thing i see, you look at somthing at egg read the so so reviews then look at the same item at another place that got reviews and there are no or not near as many of the type reviews that you see at newegg... so if its a item thats not not up to par at new egg then shouldent the same kinda reviews be at the outher stores?? i been looking at mo-bos and see a lot of like bent pins, doa's looked openbox ect.... but if i got to like am azon or tiger nicx or who ever and read the reviews from them on the same item no one has writen them type of review there thats what kinda gets me .. maby there not posting the bad ones?? it just seems odd. also i seems that after a item goes on sale at new egg thats when there seems to be a run of bad reviews. i could be seeing into this wrong.. well all i can say now is good luck and hope the best for ya..
