I need the best wireless adapter possible for gaming. But make it practical, I don't need features that I will never use. This will be used solely for gaming.

Solution
A game does not need a lot of speed it needs very clean constant data which very few wireless connections can offer.

First very cheap thing to try is to use a 15ft USB extension cable and see if you can place you current adapter at a different point in the room it gets more signal.

There really isn't a "best" adapter your house is going to make much more difference than some of the minor difference between the adapters.

Be very careful about using 802.11ac. It only runs on 5g and 5g in most houses does not have as good signal levels. Also when you run 802.11ac you need 4 channels (80mhz) which increases you chance of interference from neighbors. This also happens on 2.4g running 40mhz channels.

Many times you are going to be...

There is no one 'best'.

g, n, ac. Distance. Other environmental conditions (walls, building construction, interference).
All of those, and more, come into play.

What have you tried that doesn't work well, and why?

But overall, gaming via WiFi will always have worse performance than fully wired.

Many times you are going to be better off setting the router to use only a single channel on 2.4g that has the least competition from neighbors. This of course reduces the speed but it is still likely faster than your internet connection and for games you need quality not quantity
