I have a gateway gt5453e computer. The power supply is 300 watts. For christmas I'm getting the PowerColor AX7750 1GBD5-DH Radeon HD 7750 video card. I'd like to have the option to overclock my cpu a little bit if i need it, probably somewhere up to 2.5 to 3 ghz, something safe. I'll likely put this small fan on the front because i heard having air flow through the front and out the back was good for circulation/cooling. I plan on upgrading just about everything eventually on it.

It looks like a cd/dvd drive was taken out of it, i'm not sure. It has a dvd player but two open empty slots below . I have a bit plugged into it, for now I'll just say general stuff. The mouse and keyboard, an xbox 360 usb charger thing. an afterglow corded xbox 360 controler, a 4 gig usb flashdrive that I have ready boost on. speakers and an earforce x11 headset. i swap out the speakers and headset sometimes but don't always unplug the power of the other. If it matters, the monitor is an e142FP dell monitor.

I have a Ky-520ATX power supply from another computer. It's 420watts. Should I swap out my computers 300 watt power supply with this, link both of them together, or should I leave it alone? Will anything explode if there isn't enough power or will it just not turn on? If there is too much is it going to try to use the extra power anyway and fry things or will it only output what is needed?

Also I have a third computer i could possibly get the power supply out of that is older than my current computer but newer than what I got the 420 watt power supply out of. But it is stock and I'm just going to guess also 300 watt.

Oh and I use my computer for games and the regular daily stuff. I know the card isn't really high end but it seems it should play what I want and later I can crossfire it with another.

So what should I do for now power supply wise? Do i have enough power on the 300 watt for the video card, small extra fan and some overclocking? Should i swap for the 420 or combine the two?

Hi,

If I were you, I would get a 500w or a 550w PSU because it will support all your rig and will provide you some "futureproofness" in case you want to upgrade your system in the future. The rig, with the new GPU, will be using (more or less) 400 watt. However, it is reccomended that people have 20-30% more power than needed. So, here are some good power units:

- Cooler Master i500: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
- Corsair CX500: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
- OCZ Fatal1ty 550w: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

These are very good options, however, if you search for them, it is easy to find other fantastic options and deals.

Hope I've helped,
