i7-4770k gets hot with corsair h100i

Hi, as the title suggests, i'm having trouble figuring this out and what the issue may be.

I have an intel i7-4770k and an h100i and after about 20 minutes of running prime95, the temps hit around 85c and my h100i is only around 35c

i have checked to see if it's mounted properly and yes it is. I have also remounted it but to no avail.

The pipes don't get that hot at all however there are vibrations (only subtle however, not sure how much vibrations there is supposed to be)

i have taken it off since then and it looks like the thermal paste was touching and spread evenly.

I'm not sure if it's the CPU or the cooler but as soon as i stop prime95 the temps of the CPU drop almost immediately to around 35c. Can anyone tell me which part the problem is? should i get the i7 replaced or is it the h100i? i can't find a solution.

Thanks for your help.

no your cpu is not faulty. If it was faulty, it will not boot up, let alone run prime95. I guess since you are so sure that you mounted it properly the first time, just send your cooler for rma. There is a chance there could be air bubbles in the system.

yeah fans are all properly connected to the h100i chip, everything works and i have corsair link up and running showing me all these temps.

power is all fine and i haven't tried overclocking so no voltage problems either i'm assuming

it was mounted correctly the first time (hence why i removed to check if it was mounted correctly), i did all the tests before removing the cooler because i knew i'd have to reapply thermal paste. I haven't reapplied thermal paste yet i'm waiting on fixing this issue because it could be a faulty h100i.

Even if i did, i would still see roughly the same temps (it's not like corsairs pre-applied thermal paste isn't going to be adequate lol).

I know all about using rubbing alcohol and cleaning it etc but the fact remains that the temps would still be around the same regardless of thermal paste.

Do you think it could be a faulty CPU chip? I read somewhere that with haswell chips, you MUST specify the voltages etc yourself, maybe it's using too much? I'll have to clock it myself in the bios to be sure of this though

Hi, yeah I'm almost positive there is nothing wrong with my setup and the way I've installed it. People have had issues with the backplate not being mounted properly and using washers etc. I've confirmed that that's not the issue, plenty of people have the h100i working properly on the Asus vi hero. Also the thermal paste was clearly touching on the entire plate so it was definitely in contact with the CPU. Fans were mounted on the top and fit perfectly on my case. I've been googling this issue and trying my hardest to find an answer but none specific to mine that have helped resolve this for me.

I've been in contact with corsair and they said they also too think it may be faulty hardware. I'll be sending it for rma soon. Not sure how many people have had faulty h100i (I'm guessing not a lot). Still, it's always good to double check everything.

Thanks for the help guys, I'll see how I go with the new unit
