After 4 long hours I finally built my new PC, with my new Sapphire 290x. Before that, I had a EVGA 550 GTX Ti, so I had the old VGA to DVI (out?) adapter for my monitor. Well, I cannot be more pissed, to see that this old adapter those not match the 290x DVI port!
The DVI port for my old GTX looked like this:
vga-till-dvi-adapter

The 290x DVI looks the same, but without the 4 pins above and below the horizontal pin to the right. So, whenever I try to insert my old adapter to the card, it doesn't work, since these 4 pins do not fit. Am I hopeless now, do I have to get a new adapter? Can I somehow break these 4 pins and would that work?

Help is appreciated!

time to buy a new monitor! they should be quite cheap anyways - most things even under $100 have a DVI input (though check to be sure). in any case, DVI is better cuz you can use cheap(er) cables and not have weird interference.

or even better - buy a monitor with HDMI, it's quicker and easier to plug in (no screws), and it'll carry audio as well.

There are very few times when I honestly recommend HDMI as a video interface. Buy a monitor with DVI, use DVI.

The thing is I live outside the US, monitors here are more expensive. Besides, the 290x and the upgrades I had to get with it were already expensive, and now a new monitor, when mine is perfectly fine... So, HDMI or DVI monitor?

Oh wait, since I cannot use my monitor with the card, is it possible for me to use my MOBO's VGA port in the meanwhile? I know it will look horrible, but will the card run? just not be used for display?

HDMI has a much lower bandwidth. Much Lower.

There are tradeoffs to both, but I will never recommend an HDMI cable unless you're running a 4K monitor. DVI is better suited for lower resolutions with higher refresh rates. So, if OP is getting anything less than a 4K monitor, I'll only recommend DVI.

As for the audio, that:
a) assumes your monitor has a built in set of speakers
b) you actually use your monitor speakers

+1
no advantage to audio carrying because monitor speakers are worthless

HDMI is fairly useless IMO. I have personally never used it for anything
