Hello all!

I've just successfully built my first computer. I'm using my old case until I can afford to drop a few bucks for a new one. I'm running the Gigabyte GA-970A-UDP3 motherboard. The computer successfully runs, but I still can't get the telltale beep I'm supposed to hear when I boot it up. In fact, I get no sound at all except when I plug headphones into one of the jacks in the back...

I've looked through the manuals that came with the board several times. The manual points to four pins in the "F_PANEL" area for speakers. It goes...

PIN (SPEAK-)
PIN
PIN
PIN (SPEAK+)

All four of said pins are listed for the speaker. The plugs available to me from the case are...

SPEAKOUTL
RETURN L
SPEAKOUTR
RETURNR

I've tried a few combinations but I can't get any sound or a beep on boot... Help?

Solution
F_Audio is for the front panel mic and headphone jacks. The F_Panel is for the speaker pins that you listed earlier which is for the beep codes speaker, the tiny speaker.

The case already has a front panel speaker... The pins described above go to the speaker. Even so, is a speaker required to make the beep necessary when booting up?

The beep codes come from a tiny speaker (about an inch or 2 long like in the picture at the link I posted) plugged into the F panel. The single beep at boot is a normal boot beep. If you have problems with your system the beep codes come in handy.

The tiny speaker just hangs there off the MB when plugged in. Look on your old MB. Maybe there is one there or maybe the MB had one built into the board.

It makes no difference if you do not have one. Just no beeps without one.

I have a feeling I'm getting the audio cables mixed up, that's why I gave the pins and the cables I have available to me from the case at the top. The four cables I listed are the only cables that mention the speakers. I have four, and four speaker pins, but I can't figure out which cable goes where.
