My computer does not have a TPM. I have a 32gm SSD which the OS in installed on, then I have a 500gb storage drive. I'd like to at least be able to encrypt my entire storage drive incase of the chance that it's lost, stolen, or confiscated. I have a few issues. I've tried only two different programs - TrueCrpyt, and DiskCrypt. First, TrueCrypt. I installed TrueCrypt and went on my way to encrypt the hard drive, however my hard drive is partitioned using GPT, which is only supports older MBR (forgive me if the acronyms are butchered). So, I moved onto DiskCrypt... It installed fine and seemed to encrypt the entire drive fine. After 12 hours, I was asked to restart my computer. Upon restart, windows was having trouble loading and asked me to recover/reinstall windows do to an issue. Unfortunately I do now have the Pro edition of windows 8.1, or else I'd likely use BitLocker. However, I'm not entirely against upgrading to Pro if 1. there's no alternatives, and 2. If I can get a few answers about BitLocker.

Without a TPM, you're required to use a flash drive to store the key file on for bootup/hibernation. Can a SD card be used instead? If the computer is lost/stolen with the usb/key file, does that mean they would be able to access the hard drive instantly? Or can a password also be required at the start of each boot alongside the key?

I'm really hoping for an alternative to upgrading, besides BitLocker I really don't think there's much reason for me to upgrade. I really appreciate any and all help if possible! I'm a bit new to data encryption, so please don't assume that I may know something.

Personally, I'd use bitlocker, it's really simple to set up, integrated into Windows, and you can assign almost anything to be a key. It allowed me to use a smartcard I have for work with now problems, and used the same pin that I use for work, zero hassle setup.
