Not going to lie, Ive been doing a lot of gaming since I built my PC. 3 days a week I end up leaving my computer running for about 8 hours at a time. I guess I was asking for something to happen, but I know people who rarely shut off their pc, every day a week, all day long basically.

I have done nothing out of the ordinary lately. This is still a new build so maybe I have a defective item? Tonight out of nowhere my computer just turned off. I tried to turn it back on, the fans started running loud, then shut off in 5 seconds. Tried to turn back on again and it wouldnt turn on at all. Unplugged psu, plugged back in, and it cut on for a few seconds, then back off. Then the power button wouldnt work at all once again. Unplugged all peripherals, that didnt help.

Its late now but tomorrow I am going to open it up and check the inside out. Any suggestions on what I should do? Reseat memory and gpu? Check mobo? Then what? How can I tell if its the psu or not? Thats what I am thinking it is. Thanks

Check your PSU first. remove all the cable of your psu from motherboard. plug in your psu and check if the fan is still running ok.

Well I will try that later tonight when I get time again. Just now though, I tried to reseat my memory. No noticeable difference.

The thing about my issue is weird though. I have to push my power button 3-7 times for it to turn on. When it does turn on, 4/5 times it shuts off in 5 seconds. That leftover 20% of the time, I ended up getting it to stay on for about 5 minutes. The first message I saw was the default start screen before BIOS, which gave me a message saying "Overclock Failed!" then, "No keyboard detected" (obviously because my keyboard was unhooked).

From there, I entered the BIOS. My Cpu was showing a temperature of 52 C which quickly went down to 41 C in a minute or so. MB was 21 C if I remember correctly. 1.392 V for cpu voltage. I am using the stock heatsink for the 8320. Is 50-60 C too high during high demand like gaming? Just to note, I have 3 fans on my case, front side and top.

So then I started windows as usual, popped my game on just to see if everything was normal, and it almost seemed that as soon as the fans went high speed during the game, it cut out. Like when more cooling is required, the computer shuts down to save itself from being damaged? When it first cut out last night I felt the top and side of my case where fans are and it didnt feel very hot or even all that warm.

Anyways, Im getting power, its just cutting out. Then the power button only works some of the time. The overlock failed error has me thinking that it could be an issue with the cpu. But I guess this could also be the motherboard. I also havent ruled out the psi. Even though its got power, it cuts out, so maybe a frayed connection inside of the psu that only allows it to run for a limited time.

When I get home later I will check the psu fan and I will also power up and see if the heatsink is still spinning for my cpu. Will update later. Any other suggestions are definitely welcome.

Also Remove your cmos battery first and put it back before you on your pc.
removing cmos battery is one solution for overclock failed.

Well I got home, opened the case, turned the pc on and it stayed on. I looked inside and all the fans were running, even on video card. no weird smells. no hot air or even warm. psu didnt feel warm. i have no idea whats going on. it works fine tonight. I guess i just needed to give it a rest? I am worried it will happen again though.

I am still convinced i pushed my cpu too far, so I downloaded core temp so i can monitor the temperature at all times. The only thing I did in the bios was set the cpu fan from standard to turbo. I dont think that wasthe fix though. Oh and I also reseated the RAM, but it did nothing when i initially did it this morning, so I ended up putting it back in its original place. Maybe just popping it out then back in had some effect?

Everything seems fine now. Earlier today I got the computer on for 5 minutes, then started my game, and within 5 minutes it cut off again. So i thought the load from the game on max settngs was doing it. However, I just played for about 4 hours on max settings, so its not that. I am still clueless, but happy it works. I plan to tweak some more bios settings, put my aftermarket cpu fan in and swap out that heatsink, and also order a backup psu just in case I ever need it.

If anyone has any ideas as to what is going on, please tell me, because I have a bad feeling that this issue will occur again.

Oh and one thing. I am learning about memory compatibility issues. So my RAM is 2 gskill ripjaws x series, DDR3 1600, my motherboard is asus m5a97 le r2.0. In bios, my settings for memory frequency is DDR3-1439 MHz. Do these numbers have to be identical? because the next highest option on bios is DDR3-1728, there is no 1600.

It looks like my bios recognized the correct voltage on RAM because it is set to auto and is putting 1.5V for RAM and thats what newegg says gskills are, 1.5V.

A side note, my bios has a setting for AI overclock tuner, it came default set to manual. The mobo manuals picture of this page has everything set to auto. Should I set this to auto? I ask because of that weird overclocking failure message I got. I dont even want to overclock, I dont need to based on the components and the game I am running. Or should it be set to DOCP? (I have no idea what docp is FYI) :) Thanks (and merry christmas)
