Hey all thanks for stopping by.

Got my Aunt's old Dell Inspiron 530. It's better than my older rig in terms of being a little faster, here are the specs:

I need a videocard and wasn't sure what I could use. Also there seems to be different types of memory this can handle according to Dell's online manual....Any help is appreciated. I just want to be able to play some games decently not AWESOME

Thanks

Basically without upgrading power supply you are limited to HD 7750, but considering you Core2Duo CPU, you don't need to go any further.

So, if you have Mini Tower:

You have basically no restrictions on physical size of the card (7750 no larger ones). There are plenty options still around, I would endorse Sapphire, Asus, Gigabyte and maybe HIS.

Since your OS is 32 bit, your max RAM can be only 4 GB (3.5GB actually used)

Anything else I can help you with?

Is there a way to switch to a 64 bit OS without having to lose anything?

I presume you have Win7 32 bit, Win7 64 bit would have to be purchased, plus more $$ for RAM, is it worth it, I can not say.
You might be able to save documents only, no programs.

Thanks

With Win 64 bit you can go up to 8 GB of DDR2 PC2-5300 (this one documented), this is the exact model still available, which was proven to work: Corsair 2GB (1x2GB) DDR2 667 MHz (PC2 5300) Desktop Memory (VS2GB667D2) http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-1x2GB-Desktop-Memory-VS2G...

In order to use 8 GB, BIOS has to be upgraded to version 1.0.18.

Video card without PSU upgrade, available now new:
HD 7750 any GDDR5 cards (DDR3 is slower and therefore a bit cheaper) http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=E...

GTX 650 only a few which do not require ancillary 6 pin power connector: ASUS GTX650-E-2GD5 (I really like this one so I would not go any further) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

Processor (CPU) can go up to E8600, faster than yours, but you can get it only on eBay, since you stated desire to get new parts only, I am not offering any choices here.

Anything else I can help you with?

P.S. useful links regarding RAM upgrade

these computer companys like yours dell hp whoever will fix the [locked] bios so you cant do certin upgrades cause they dont want you to do somthing to harm there product and you to come back on them for warentty or refund . now ther are some ways to trick the board and get some things to work its just a matter of finding what if there is one
just look at the threads that folks trying to upgrade ther cards on these computers so if you go for it i would stay with what ever card brand is allready in there if uits a amd card go back with a amd and that may not fly.. then your out and looking for the workaround to fool there bios

Are you thinking about Dual Boot? You have to set it up when you are installing OS...

I am not so good in this area, so make a new post with Dual Boot and OS choices, you will have plenty responses quickly.
