For the past few weeks, my computer has been trying to install two windows updates every time it starts up and shuts down, but they fail every time. I learned that since they are for IE 10 and IE 11, and I haven't updated IE since I don't use it, I should download them and try again. The only problem being that I can't install either of them. The installer finishes and then says it cant be installed. The only reason this worries me is my computer trying to install the updates over and over. In the past I have had two computers rendered useless due to problems with windows updates (which is why I'm on my third computer in as many years). Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Do what I've done for many years, turn off automatic updates. As long as you've got a reliable Internet Security package like CIS installed you'll be fine, and no more Windows updates woes.

I can hear people screaming already "Don't do that!", well I've been doing that for 15-20 years with no regrets, but you must have reliable online security in place.

Whenever I want to check for Windows updates I do it manually and select only those that I want to download:
Start > All Programs > Windows Update
