Upgrade or stay

Hi, so I'm currently looking at investing in upgrading my PC slightly but thought I'd ask a couple questions before doing so. So to jump straight into it my current main components are:

CPU: Intel Q9550 2.8GHz Quadcore
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 4890
Ram: 4GB DDR-800
Mobo: (Have to get back on this - it's old LGA775 anyway)

So basically I don't have the money to do a complete overhaul at this stage - I've got about $500 to spend but I'm curious as to where I should begin. I'm either wanting to go for a graphics card upgrade first (to a Radeon 280X) otherwise if I should get a new motherboard first and go for DDR3 RAM.

My problem with upgrading my motherboard is I feel if I do - then I would have to go for a new socket to support newer CPUs, but that just means more expense and I feel my CPU is fine for now. However I'm curious if there are any socket 775 Motherboards that could be otherwise recommended that support DDR3 RAM. From my research they seem very scarce.

Background info on what I want it for I guess: I'm quite a heavy gamer - but not in the sense I need to run every game on max settings at max resolution (as you can tell from my current setup). Being a competitive gamer I tend to actually go for lower settings anyway.

Many thanks in advance!

Asrock still make a 775 board, and it uses ddr3 but I dont believe you will get a performance boost from faster ram. Nothing tangible, anyway. Better to put the money towards a haswell build.

Have you got an ssd in there? It wouldnt increase gaming much, but the pc would 'feel'
more pokey;Like new, actually. Old sata 2 is a bit slower than that quad.
It wouldnt be dead money as you could take it forward.

Not at this stage, although I do plan to get one for my OS at some stage. That is also why I was considering getting a graphics card first. It won't run to its full potential, however, until early next year when I can upgrade my Mobo, CPU and RAM I think it would be the better investment considering my spending limit at this stage.

Yeah, you're probably right. However, I ended up getting a graphics card thanks to mine dying....on Christmas! :(
