Try plugging it in again? Make sure both ends are tight and secure.

Did you select the proper keys on you laptop to output to vga as well as proper input on the tv?

Right click on the desktop, Screen Resolution

Is the TV shown there? If it is, duplicate the image onto it.

ok so i went onto screen resolution and the tv was on there, i double clicked it and ticked the box 'extend my desktop onto this monitor' and clicked ok. now my desktop is showing on my tv.

No. Sometimes you have to hit Fn key + F8 or F7 to output to vga and on the tv make sure the source is set to vga or pc, not hdmi 1 or hdmi 2

Any options other than extend? Look for duplicate.

that's the only option apart from 'use this device as my primary monitor, but that option is greyed out when i click secondary display.

aha! if i move my cursor very far to the left i can see it on my tv, and i can also drag a restored down box along so i can see it on my tv screen and then restore it back up so i cansee it on my tv but not on my laptop, which will have to do. thank you very much for your help both of you :)
