A pentium D? Man, that's pretty old. Have you considered a total system rehaul?

Also, what's your budget? You could probably get a better card with the same money?

GT 8800 uses a lot of power, and they also tend to overheat and crash, so if you are buying a used card, make sure you test it first.

The 8800 is a bit better than the 630, but a new 6570 is the same speed and is a more modern card.

by the way I'm not using that build I have a different laptop which is way better, but my little bro uses it, and we enjoy playing some games on lan, so as long as it can run games with little or no fps drops at I dont care what settings at least at 720p then I'm good to go, budget is 60$ maximum no above

oh and I have a oldie 8400gs, I can spare 100$ on either new mobo + new ddr3 ram(I run ddr2) or a new gpu If I take gpu I'll end up with only 2gb ddr2

You are better off overall with a new video card for the Pentium D than just a new motherboard, CPU and RAM, which will be over $100. A new Radeon 6570 will run in just about any system and is a bit faster than the 8800 while using a lot less power.

What you may be able to do is get a used core 2 duo system with about a 2.4 gig CPU, and the video card, that will cost over $100 but will be a huge upgrade than just the card alone. If you look around you can find some tower systems with a Core 2 Duo for $100 or less, plus about $60 for the video card.

so you recommend a 6570, what about a 6670, and do they both surpass the 630

And btw 6670 and 6570 have exact same price tag , while 630 is cheaper by 17$ where I am, and I also heard that the 630 outperforms the 640 is that true or not?

6670 and 6570 are almost the same speed. If you can find a GDDR5 version of the card, that would be the best one to get, if the 6670 is the same price for you, get a 6670. Saving $17 for an 630 is not worth it at all, unless the card has GDDR5 RAM.

The 640 is faster than the 630 and also faster than the 6670/6570.

Another card you may look at is the Radeon 7750, if that is close to the price of the other cards, that would be the best one to get as it's faster than the GT 630 (even with the GDDR5 RAM) or the 6670/6670 cards.
