About 2 days ago, I started having a bizarre issue arise. After a random period of time, usually after inactivity, my laptop will "lose" the hard drive. If I open a window, I get a blank page, if I CTRL+ALT+DEL, I get an error, and if I use the taskbar to restart, it won't shutdown.

To compound it, when this happens, a restart will then give me a MBR Error 1, followed by MBR Error 2 when I press any key.

If I go into BIOS, I can force start Windows, which runs normally until the first problem pops up.

I first thought it might be tied to the screensaver, or sleep mode, but I'm not sure. Also, I've observed right before this happens I sometimes see a phantom window close.

I've scanned with AVG, Malware Bytes, Checked for Errors, and nothing. There's no new programs, downloads or anything that preceded this problem. Not sure how to proceed.

I only have Factory install of Windows 7, and no restore CD. I have to use an external CD/DVD Drive as well, but never tried loading from it.

Sounds like the Hard drive is having some issues. I would be checking your S.M.A.R.T. status and backing everything up.

After checking the S.M.A.R.T. status, and getting nothing from 2 different sources, I ran the default Error Checker on Windows. While nothing was repaired, the crashing mysteriously stopped. A restart still produces the same problem of needing to use BIOS to force select the HDD to get Windows to start.

So, is there a file that is corrupt/missing that Windows isn't detecting, or is there another issue?
