Hi,

First of, this is my first AMD card I have purchased. I replaced a GTX 760 with an AMD 7970 after a clean install. I have ran into an issue where it will not play sound.

Here are my specs:

Mobo: Asus p8 z77-v LK
CPU: i5-3570k
GPU: Sapphire AMD 7970
RAM: 16 GB
OS: Windows 7 64 bit Professional

I have tried using the realtek drivers, and the drivers from the install disc and Catalyst that came with the graphics card. But when I right click the sound icon - player devices it shows the monitors and the speakers as not plugged in, also it shows realtek digital outputs as default devices and working.

In device manager under the sound, video, and game controllers, the only drivers there are ATI HDMI Audio and Realtek High Definition Audio.

I have used drive sweeper to uninstall them and reinstall one at time. This provided more devices to show up under player devices but all were not plugged in. Are these driver conflicting?

Any suggestions or steps I should follow?

Thank you

And what do you expect to be plugged in? A Monitor with sound on the hdmi port or analog speakers on the Realtech? What IS plugged in?

Try disabling the one that is not in use, either the AMD if not using it over HDMI or the onboard Realtek if you are.

My monitors are plugged into the graphics card, and I am trying to get sound out of them. I am trying to get the "Speakers - Realtek High Definition Audio" or the "Digital Display Audio - AMD High Definition Audio" to be plugged in. Right now I can see them but they are "not plugged in" and I cannot get them active.

The two devices that are enabled are "Realtek Digital Output" and "Realteak Digital output (optical)".

These are what I see under player devices. I have tried disabling "AMD High Definition Audio Device" under drivers and vice versa with the "Realtek High Definition Audio" driver. Which I end up with the same result of not being able to activate the speakers from my monitors.

Thank you

And you are using HDMI cord to the monitors? Or are you using a different sound cord?

They are the same DVI cables I used with my GTX 760 graphics card.

Audio through hdmi will only work, if the monitor is capable and most aren't. They only except analog audio through a separate cable.

DVI doesn't support sound.

Well don't I look like a fool right now. Just to clarify things. If I went out and got external computer speakers would that work with the monitors on DVI cables? Also I tested my TV from the HDMI port and my computer did not pick it up, ill try it to a monitor next.

I noticed there is only 1 HDMI port and 1 Display port, how would you recommend I set up to monitors to the 7970?

Or are there other methods out there for what I have right now?

Thank you both for the fast responses.

If you have a DVI cable possibly your monitor has a minijack for sound as well so you run the sound from the motherboard in a separate cable to the monitor. HDMI can carry the sound from the AMD audio to the monitor.

Try to connect the TV to the hdmi port, one monitor to the dvi and one to the display port (either direct or via a dp-to-dvi cable. The TV should play the sound via the hdmi cable. Additional speakers connected to the Realtech chip on the mobo will pay sound, if the TV is not connected.

Thanks everyone, I am able to get sound out of the monitors now by using a separate cable to the motherboard jack port on the back.

Now with the TV, I have it plugged up to the graphics card HDMI port and the TV's HDMI port put it is not picking it up. When I go to right click - screen resolution, it is displayed as a grayed out box while the monitors are both active. I select "extend desktop to this display" on the TV grayed out box and hit apply. It says "Unable to save display settings", I hope this helps clarify the problem I am having with HDMI to the TV.

Thank you for the help so far everyone.

Do you use the adapters, that came with the card? Three monitors many only be supported, if one is connected to the display port.

Right now I have 2 monitors on the DVI - HDMI for video, and seperate cords from monitor to motherboard jack ports for sound. The TV is connected via HDMI - HDMI to to the graphics card. This had worked on my GTX 760, so I am not sure why it would not work on this card.

To add to this, would a display port to HMDI adapter work on the display port on the graphics card to the TV? Along side the 2 DVI -HDMI cables to monitors, to make a total of 3 running monitors on the graphics card. That way I can keep using the rather lengthy HDMI cable I have for the TV.

I hope that clarifies more of how things are set up.
