Hey, basically my computer crashed one day. It had crashed a couple of times before, in particular when I plugged/unplugged a jack (in the motherboard). Anyways, this time it wouldn't turn on. I tried taking the graphics card out, trying then with it plugged via VGA in the motherboard, nothing. I took it to a computer shop I have been to twice before (both times fixed the problem, they do a free diagnostic then you pay for parts/labour if need be).

Anyways, on monday two days ago I get a call. Apparently, the computer boots without the graphics card in. Also, the HDD is corrupted, so that apparently explained the crashing. The guy tells me the graphics card looks responsible and I will have to buy a new one if I want one. Of course I do, so I go in and buy a new 1TB HDD and a budget graphics card for HDMI output etc, and spent around 100 pounds. I also give him a tenner to fix the cables from the case to the motherboard, as the front inputs for audio etc weren't in when I got the new case and I couldn't figure it myself.

So I get home, and the system won't turn on. After ringing him it seems like some of the cables were wrong, I take them out, it boots into windows without the graphics card. I get my brand new graphics card, slot it in, no post beep or boot. Confused, I take it out then put it back in. This time it DOES beep but again no display? So I ring the shop AGAIN, and the guy says it sounds like the motherboard slot for the graphics card is broken. Is this even possible? I double checked the BIOS, I was indeed booting from the PCI express slot for graphics yet again, with the card in (even when it beeped which after multiple tests wasn't often) neither the graphics card or being plugged into the motherboard itself via VGA would post/show display.

The hilarious thing is, they asked me if I wanted my old graphics card back, and I said no (as they told me it was the problem) and they said they would recycle it. Do I need a new motherboard now as well? I have left makes out etc as they assured me it was compatible but then again they could be wrong..

sounds like it's a very rare case that the slot is damaged which would make a card work sometimes and not others.

Is that definitely possible? Because if it is then I'll be buying a new motherboard too lol

The socket is just a piece of plastic with metal pins inside. The metal pins can corrode and come un-soldered from the board.
