I am looking into buying an i5 4670k and I want a good cooler for it. I am going to be doing a lot of gaming and I plan to overclock. I want to get the best cooler I can without spending too much. If I spend around $100 for a cooler then I might as well buy an i7. This rules out the Noctua coolers and water coolers. I hear coolers like the Hyper 212 evo are pretty standard but how well can they really preform as far as overclocking goes and is the boost even worth the money? Half of the reason I also want a cooler is so that it is quiet and keeps my cpu nice and cool.

You could do light OCing with the hyper evo 212 but the temperature will obviously get higher. i7 is not necessary for gaming, you won't see much benefits from gaming.
