Help with hooking up surround sound to my pc via toslink

Pretty much my questions simply is, will it work?

Sound System: http://www.ebay.com/ctg/Sony-DAV-S300-5-1-Channel-Home-Theater-System-/69508465
Motherboard: http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/990FX%20Extreme4/

I want to run my sound from my pc to the receiver via toslink. My main concern is on the box of the receiver it says "Optical digital input for digital satellite system"
What I want to know is if I connect toslink to the reciever and to my pc, can I just put the reciever in the digital sattilite mode and still get the audio feed from my pc?
Any thoughts would be appreciated, Thanks.

P.S. The reason I'm asking is because I haven't purchased the toslink cable, and if it won't work what can i purchase to set it up correctly. Thank you again... :D.

See, the thing is with the optical connection is that you won't be able to get 5.1 sound unless the audio file (whether it's alone or coupled with a video) is encoded correctly (some sort of Dolby standard, I can't remember exactly which).

You will definitely be able to do stereo sound no matter what, though.

For sure I'm going to order the cable and I'll let you know how it works. Thanks.
