Losing a full stick of memory when I increase speed in bios

I am using 4x4gb CORSAIR ram (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233143) in the recommend configuration on a Rampage IV Extreme motherboard. The RAM is rated for 1600MHZ from the vendor however the motherboard, when left to its own devices, automatically puts it at 1333MHZ. So, I manually set it for 1600. This has not been a problem in the past.

However today I noticed that my rig was only detecting 12GB. After testing each stick of ram one stick at a time and seeing each works fine I finally noticed that when I manually configure the ram speed to 1600 in the bios that its only detecting 12gb instead of 16gb. When I drop it back down to 1333MHZ it detects the full 16gbs again.

Any ideas on what the problem may be?

Solution
Not very smart in this area, but it does seem to be related to either.

Bad MOBO (or off brand? like asrock problems I see often)

Bios is what I would aim at and hard for the first solution clearing CMOS a time or two to be sure and try 5ish of the last bios updates. I see alot of people solving ram issues through bios upgrades/downgrades. So it is a suggestion I would make.

Bad ram? doubtful since it seems to work fine before the OC ... hrmmm

I would aim my solution at the mobo being the culprit unfortunatley, but don't take my word for it ... post your mobo type and ram. ( I may have missed it if you did post it so I'll re-check in a sec and do some research and maybe post back.

Thanks for the advice, but none of it worked. =( So far I have upgraded to the latest bios firmware, ran memtest86, 0 errors. And when I set the speed to 1600 it automatically ups the voltage to well over 1.6. They are rated for 1.55 voltage @ 1600mhz. Any other suggestions?

Sorry, I mean that I CAN manually set the voltage at 1.55, but that once I increased the speed setting the motherboard automatically increased the voltage on its own, well over 1.55, to 1.66. So its got more than enough juice.

I was just in the bios and I found a GPU/DRAM POST, when I clicked on it it shows all 4 memory sticks and says they are all running at 1600 MHZ. Also in the DRAM timing settings, all 4 sticks are represented in each applicable category and all have the same exact settings. However, the total memory the motherboard is reading is still only 12GB. This is also confirmed in windows 8.1 64-bit as well.

I am beginning to suspect that this is a bug in the latest bios...

What CPU are you using?

""Was able to resolve, only by replacing the CPU and memory, not sure which solved it, most likely the CPU.""

Read this topic very close as I just skimmed and it may not hold water if I mis-read something.

Splendid
All I know is if you OC the CPU, it will lower the ram speed, but I haven't heard of lowering the size of the ram.
Try reseting your bios to defaults.
Try all 4 sticks just on 1 side of your CPU and see if that works.
