of course I need a motherboard, but im going to be building a mini itx system next month and im using the computer exclusively for gaming ill be getting a quad core 3ghz system that I wont be overclocking at all. with that said I know I can get the new haswell cpus or last gen cpus, butt I cant really think of any features I would need or pay more for on a motherboard, but im a newb so I could be wrong so please enlighten me. what do I give up if say I buy the cheapest mini itx for this gen or last gen intel cpus, as far as gaming performance or features I would actually use.

so I wont be overclocking
I don't plan to ever upgrade, I use for 5 years and get a new one
I wont be going sli
I will be putting in a nice 250-300 graphics card.

with the itx motherboards look at the chipset on the motherboard. there going to be the h or z chipset. some of the cheaper chipset is the intel b chipset. you want to use the h or z. the x77 chipset will have two 6g sata ports and the rest will be sata 3.0 ports. the newer x87 and h81 will have all six gig sata ports and more usb 3.0 ports then the older x77 chipset. with the mb also look at the slots on the mb. some mb have two video slots and nothing else. some have one video card slot and two-three pci slots for usb or sound cards. be care full that you dont buy a too cheap of a mb that has no real support or bios updates. try keep with asus/gigbyte/msi/asrock.

For a good motherboard, using ASUS Z87 boards for example, an mATX board that has more features can be a fair amount cheaper than an ITX size -- so you can save money with a little larger board because they just don't sell as many ITX so they may cost more or have an expensive unneeded feature.
