Do I need to connect the monitor to the gpu with hdmi or is there another way I could use it

This depends on what outputs your monitor has. If it has DVI / VGA outputs and your GPU does as well, then of course you could use those.

If you need more specific help, tell me what monitor you have, and what GPU you have.

If it only has VGA you could just use a DVI to VGA converter

With the monitor you are getting it supports all three cables, HDMI, VGA, and DVI. The r9 280x has a DVI output and an HDMI output. I'd recommend using HDMI as to that yields the highest quality, but if for some reason you only have DVI, then that works just as effectively.

At the moment he said he will be using an old dell one and so far hasn't listed the available ports.

I was just stating what would be compatible for the new monitor and what outputs the r9 280x has.
