So currently i own a Phenom x4 9600 working on 2.4 Ghz and i feel its bottlenecking my system , i have a HD 5830, so i got the chance to get Phenom II 940 or The athlon x2 270 for a deacent price the Phenom is a bit more expensive. I know my system is old and all but i need something to fulfill my gaming needs for atleast 5 more months before i make a new system.

With my current CPU i can't even play League of legends with more than 40 fps, my old cpu that died AMD Athlon x2 5600+ was working way better in games that my Phenom 9600.

So i wanted to ask you, what should i get the Phenom II or the Athlon II specificaly aiming for normal gaming for the next few months. Phenom is about 20 $ more than the Athlon.

First, let's get something straight. Yesterday's games may not benefit much from more than 2 cores, but today's games are a different story entirely. Modern (high-end) games written in the last few years do indeed benefit from more cores. Some will use all the cores you can throw at it.
You must be playing older or poorly threaded games if the AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ out performed the Phenom x4 9600.

Before you decide on a replacement processor, make sure your MB has an AM2+ or AM3 socket. If it has the older AM2 socket, the CPUs you are looking at won't work...

Yes i thought something like that, but is it worth it? I mean most games dont benefit from cores that much, and the thing is i went from a dual core to a quad core with L3 cache and i lost performance, allot, that's why i ask this, but if you are so sure its better then i guess i should go for the Phenom.

EDIT: I just found this one AMD Phenom II X2 550, and its cheaper then both of the above and it has L3 cache, is this worth a buy i mean will i feel any difference compared to my 9600 and will that solve my bottleneck issues with my 5830?

Before you decide on a replacement processor, make sure your MB has an AM2+ or AM3 socket. If it has the older AM2 socket, the CPUs you are looking at won't work. Next, be sure you have the latest BIOS for the MB. If it is too old, it may not recognize the "newer" CPU.

The AMD Phenom II X2 550 is capable little dual core with an L3 cache, and if it is the Black Edition it can be easily overclocked. Some AMD Phenom II X2 550 are actually quad cores with 2 cores disabled for either functional or marketing purposes. Usually 1 or more of those cores can be enabled if your MB's BIOS has that capability.

Thanks, yeah i understand that, was just wondering if anyone had experience with them to tell me what to pick. And about new games yeah the new AAA games are all going in the wrong direction for IMO so i don't play them, what i'm playing are older games or newer games on old engines like DAYZ standalone. And the CPU will be on me for a short time, thank for the info on the 550 i think il get that one.
