I was wondering how much of a boost putting your OS on an SSD gives, I know in games there are no more loading screens (with a capable CPU and GPU). But how does putting an OS on an SSD affect speeds besides start-up speeds.
I recently built a new PC with an SSD. After installing the OS and doing all the updates, Windows 7 only take 20 seconds to start up. W8 is faster. Huge difference. It used to take a few minutes to completely start up with an old 7200 RPM HD.

if you are hoping for some fps bump, then no, it's not for that. It's for loading faster and things react quicker than before. Try loading photoshop with lots of filters (? sorry i just read this one somewhere, i dont know photoshop
Just like the previous post mentions your windows and programs will open much faster it is truly night and day difference. I took a different approach by using an ssd cache drive and things open and load so fast that watching non ssd systems load drives nuts.
