So ive almost finished my build, but i need a little help. I have an fx 6300 at the moment and have ordered a motherboard that i dont think will come so i have asked for a refund on it (dodgy site, my own fault) but i have been thinking about it. I thought that i could pick up a hyper 212 plus (was always going to get an aftermarket cooler) a cheap 2500k and a maximus 4 gene z mobo, or even a sabertooth z77 and a 3570k with that for a bit more, a couple hundred more actually. Should i just keep the fx or switch to intel sandy/ivy? If not ill just by the motherboard for amd that ive been looking at. I have a 650w gold psu, 8gb ares ram, 1tb hdd, gtx 760 and the fx atm, but i just dont know what to do, im so close to a finished build. I will be playing bf4, ac4, dayz standalone, really just new games. Someone please help!

I would say go for the intell IF your budget allows it. 6300 should handle those games decently though, why the upgrade if i may ask? Bad frame rates? You already have the GTX 760? Can also consider buying a 8320/50 and buy a better GPU if and only if you haven't bought a GPU yet ;)

Switch to Intel, for the love of God. I actually recommend you do the following if you're a bit on a budget: Buy a Z87 motherboard with good reputability and pick up a cheap i3-4130 for about $120. The i3-4130 is a better performer than the FX-6300, enough that in games you'll notice the difference but the main reason for doing so is that you can easily upgrade to the i5-4670k (or the i5-5xxx) in the future.

Don't let the 2 cores of an i3 deter you, overall it's a much better processor than the FX-6300 due to its better per core performance and its use of real cores in general. Second only to my HDD, my FX-6300 is easily the biggest bottleneck in my system and considering how CPU intensive the games you want to play are, you don't want a bottlenecking CPU. Also, don't let people tell you that overclocking will eliminate or even significantly mitigate the bottleneck. I've been down that road, and while it's impressive to see my FX-6300 get to a stable 4.2 GHz up from 3.5 GHz, in real world game performance it barely nets me more than 4 - 8 fps on my minimums.

If you're not on a budget, if you can afford the i5-3570k with a Z77 motherboard (or a Z87 motherboard with an i5-4670k) I highly, highly recommend you get that. The performance difference is HUGE. In fact, Tom's Hardware recently released an article on the best gaming CPUs, with the FX-6300 being considered entry level, the i3-4130 being considered mid-range, and the i5-4670k being considered high-end:

Well i had the computer up and running for a couple weeks until my 7950 died so sold that off and picked up a summer job and got some money so sold off my components that i had to build a better system, and to be honest i wasnt that impressed on bf4, far cry 3 and some other games with the performance coming from my laptop, so i want to get faster. I am sick of using my laptop for only LoL as that is all it can really handle without getting too hot for my liking. I already got the 760 as i got a good deal on it and as i will be mainly gaming i want to get something good. I am really tempted on the 2500k tbh but im not sure on it as it is getting older, would there be any benefit of having it over the fx?

Well compared to FX there is an advantage, a huge one at that, as FX is really a dwindling series in my opinion and it's power and performance is simply not good. Even an i5-2500k is a much better performer, but like I said though, try for a more modern Intel CPU like an i5-4670k or an i3-4130 if you're looking to save money but want to have some level of future proofing.

For a used i5-2500K that may or may not work? No way. What is $200 NZD in USD?

Translates to about 164 usd, stuff here isnt cheap, for $20 more i could bid on the 3570k, used since launch and has been oc to 4.2 for close to a year on the sabertooth board i mentioned. Would that be a better investment? the 3570k and the sabertooth for 220 nz each at the moment but i cant buy them now as there is no option so ill have to wait if i do decide on it

Any MB that the i5-2500K will work in is a dead end thanks to Intel constantly changing sockets. But I can't say how long the AM3+ socket will be around either. But the Intel LGA 1155 socket can accept far more powerful processors than the AM3+ socket MBs.

Yeah intel changing sockets is a pain but it is for a good reason. Im just lost for what do here, either way im looking at spending about 250 nzd, so if im going to spend that much on mobo + cooler i may aswell consider changing cpu while im at it
