if you wish to keep the password for when the computer first turns on, but dont want to have to type it in after the PC has been in sleep, here are instructions

in Windows XP, do this:
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Click Performance and Maintenance.
Click Power Options.
Click Advanced tab.
Under 'Options' section, uncheck the check box for Prompt for password when computer resume from standby option.

In Windows Vista, 7 or 8/ 8.1, here are the steps
go to control panel,
then system and security,
then power options.
click change plan settings next to the active plan,
then click change advanced power...

Hit ALT CTRL DEL, change password and for the new password leave blank, just put in the old one where it says to, and then click continue or finish or whatever else it says to do:D

click the link at the top, which says 'change settings that are not available',
and then change the 'require password on wakeup' option so it says no
