looking at gaming benchmarks, for say a 200 dollar cpu both amd and intel cpus seem to be very comparable, but amds are using a lot more power, why is that, is that power usage for like all 8 cores at full speed, or just a standard power usage. I would assume more power is more heat, which is a concern as im trying to build a mini or micro atx system, I wont be ocing so im not sure which is better

Solution

fairly simple it comes down to a few things amds manufacturing process is god damn aweful compared to intels 22mn vs amds 32mn if you but them side by side amds is massive

the large the chip the more power draw the smaller the chip less power draw.

if amd and intel had same manufacturing process the power draw would be quite equal...

The efficacy is work done divided by power. AMD cpu's are not very efficient hence use a lot more power for the same job, resulting in more heat. If you want to build a htpc, use a haswell pentium g. costs £40,
has the processing power of an older q6600 quad core, and sips electricity. Couple it up to an amd 7750
if you want to play games. Lower power also means a cheaper power unit. cx400 if you can find one.

If you're building an HTPC, you shouldn't be looking at an FX-8350 to begin with. That's major overkill for what you want. Yes, the AMD CPUs do use more power but they also cost a good deal less for the same performance. For a small ATX HTPC you would be better off looking at an AMD APU like the A10-6790K because it has Radeon HD graphics built onto the CPU die (using less power than a CPU and separate vidcard) and is more than capable of displaying pre-rendered video in HD now and Super HD in the future. It's also a Quad-Core so it will have decent multitasking when needed. If however, you're building a gaming PC, the AMD FX-6300 is the best deal on a gaming CPU at $120. It won't bottleneck anything and it only costs $110USD.

the issue with these cores is more electric draw more heat plus the 8 cores sit 80-100w idle. while intel barely does a fart in a breeze in idle this is more due to power managment as well its something amd needs to work on better with there other issue is man power and resources which intel has in spades which is why amd struggles.

Is this a gaming system or just a average unit
