idk much about bitcoins too, but from what i understood from an article published a few months ago here, and what i understood from that article is that bitcoin mining is a compute heavy task and AMD Radeon graphics cards cores are good at these kind of computing. and radeon R9-290 series cards have plenty of these cores (around 2500) and they are quite cheap.

now people would go to nvidia cards like GTX 780 or 780Ti but they aren't good at this kinda tasks and are also quite expensive. so thats why people radeon GPU's, especially these one's for their cheap price tag.

and recently there was a huge increase in bitcoins value, around 1000$ for a bitcoin. and because this card is so effective for bitcoin minning(compared to other GPU's) people started buying them like crazy.

According to the stuff I have read on the topic, bitcoin mining is all about "hashes per watt"
Since the more "hashes" you solve equals more bitcoins/litecoins, which have real money value, you want to get as many as you can for the least amount of money.

The program used for mining uses the gpu for computing, and the current AMD cards apparently have a big advantage right now for doing this.
Since you want to leave your computer running this program for as many hours a day as possible, electricity costs become a significant factor.

Thus "hashes per watt"

Thanks for the info i kind of get the picture now. almost of how they use GPU's to hack passwords like solving equations or the like
