I have Windows 7 64-bit. I installed another 4 gb of ram today to add on to my 4 already installed. I now have 8192 MB of installed memory. However, 4865 MB of that is hardware reserved. Why is over half of my memory being taken up by hardware?

It is not taken up by hardware,it simple doesn't work! Try each individual stick first. If that works, try different slots next. If that doesn't help, post the full specs of your system and ram.

Make sure you have the latest BIOS, reset the CMOS and try with the sticks in the suggested dual channel config - let us know mobo, CPU and model(s) of the DRAM - when you say you 'added' - if it's not of the same package of DRAM - a single package of all- then you may have sticks that don't want to play nice
