Greetings,

I have an off the shelf dvr (Eyemax 16ch HD-SDI). It will write to an eSata disk, but I would like to write to the storage in a PC. The PC I plan to build will use a hot-swap hdd rackmount case with this motherboard (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E168... ) and this controller card (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E168... ) for 12 Hdd in RAID 6. Windows will not be installed on this array, it is strickly for video storage. Though I will be running windows 7 on another drive and have the PC operating titlers.

Is it possible to use this internal storage array as a storage drive for the dvr via esata?

The DVR will allow me to backup its internal storage via ethernet, but only in .exe format. Which is its own player type package. When the dvr writes directly to disk it saves as .avi which is what I prefer and the reason I need to go the esata direction.

I hope the question is clear enough.

Thanks!

Edit:

Let's simplify this.

I have the DVR. I want to have a RAID 6 array that the DVR can access via eSATA. I will be building a rackmount computer to run video titlers and other things and would like to house the RAID 6 array in this rackmount case. The array does not need to be tied to the motherboard of the rackmount computer, if that makes things easier. How do I accomplish this eSATA storage solution?

After reading a lot, it seems that I am trying to build a das. From what I can tell I need an external raid controller like the areca arc-5060 which has an esata interface or a raid controller with an exterexternal sff-8088. Unfortunately the arc-5060 will only access 8 drives per esata port and to use the sff-8088 I would need a sff-8088 in the DVR which is not possible. Though can I use an sff-8088 to esata cable to connect from the das to the DVR?

You already know your dvr has esata and usb so no you can't. Your only hope is to 'fool' the unit into thinking an enclosure is a simple esata drive.
You will need to purchase a 12/16 bay external esata enclosure with hardware raid6 built in as you have no way to use port multiplication or know if your dvr even has it.

I would seriously research if you can even attach anything larger than 2TB to the DVR first.

What was that referencing?

The DVR manual states that 12 drives can be installed through eSATA. So it looks like the DVR does handle port multiplication, because it only has one eSATA port. The manual also states that there is no size limit to the eSATA drives and it will setup mirroring. Idk if it is RAID 1 through hardware or software, though. Either way, I want RAID 6. So yes, I want to create one large drive with a RAID controller then get it to the DVR host with the DAS being the drive. This is why I mentioned a RAID controller with sff-8087 for internal drives and a sff-8088 for an external interface. The sff-8088 is how some RAID cards expand storage and connect to host machines. So I thought I would be able to go sff-8088 to eSATA. I did find a cable which has SATA as host and sff-8088 as target:

http://www.cs-electronics.com/iSAS-cables-NEW.htm
about halfway down the page.

Then go SATA to eSATA or go internal.

I wanted to avoid smaller enclosures to keep down on noise from smaller fans. Which is why I would like to use the 4u that I intend to build a computer in and power the RAID card off of that motherboard.

Thoughts?
