Troubleshooting Probable Modem and/or Router Speed Problem(s)

Hello all--I just joined so be gentle :)

I have a desk top PC with a standard (I guess) ethernet modem-router configuration with a cable ISP. Both devices are owned, not leased. I'm just not getting the speed I should be getting. The cable company guy (who was here to check on a TV issue not relevant here) suggested that we get a gateway to solve any modem and router issues--assuming any of EITHER exist. I've been reading about how I can replace my set-up either with separate devices or a gateway and, frankly, I've decided to try the first method becasue of its versatility. However, I'd like to, if possible, be able to determine BEFORE BUYING which of the two devices is more or most "culpable"--obviously, the idea is to replace only what's really necessary. Can this be done, and, if so, how?

MANY thanks, and happy holidays.

Gateway's or all inones are notoriously bad on the wireless compared to a separate sidecar router and modem. Just saying.

So a few things:

What speed are you getting?
What speed are you supposed to be getting?
How are you testing the speed?
Do you see signal levels and/or error logs on the cable modem by going to 192.168.100.1?
What model modem is it?
What model router is it?
