formating a used hdd

Solution
Hi

Once data cable is pluged into a SATA port which is enabled in the BIOS
(and SATA power connector attached)

on next startup you will get a new hardware found please restart the PC to recognise it message
after which the disk will show up with one or more drive letters

If this does not happen for diagnostics goto Disk Management
[Control Panel / Computer Management/ Disk Management]

Does the hard disk show up
If not you have problem

If it shows up with partitions it should be useable without any more work
Format [quick ticked by default] will clear old information but data could be recovered until space used by data overwritten

Format without quick [ ] ticked does a write to hard disk sectors erasing old data permanantly...

Format without quick [ ] ticked does a write to hard disk sectors erasing old data permanantly and reports any bad sectors found

(assuming Vista or 7 - XP does not do a full wipe disk format)
