Ive installed windows 7 onto my new computer. I used the retail disk that I had previously had for my old computer. I assumed that I had to either buy a new activation code or de-activate the one on my older computer however, typing the code that I had already used for my old computer onto my new one, I was quite surprised that it worked. After getting successful activation I went to update my new computer but kept on getting the message 'Failure configuring Windows update' after everything had been installed. Im confused as whether this issue has anything to do with me using the same license code on another computer or something else completely.

Go to control panel - system. Scroll down to the bottom section titled "Windows activation"
Does it say "Windows is activated", or is there a link to activate your copy of windows?
That will tell you if you have really, successfully activated windows.

Then go to control panel - windows update - Are there updates to be processed?
view update history - any failures will be shown and the failure code. You can search the Microsoft forums for solutions to those particular failures.

Just checked and it says 'windows is activated' which is kinda strange with it already be installed and activated on my old computer. Any reason for this? Also just checked on the update history and since there are 131 failed updates...would deactivating the activation code on my old computer help?

Activating it on a new machine more or less automatically deactivates it on the old machine. The old machine may have not figured it out yet. Microsoft is pretty smart about this stuff.

When I have seen this kind of behavior before (only once) when the updates would not install, I ended up having to re-install the OS from scratch. I literally spent months trying to figure it out and even a Dell Technician said it was time to re-install. Once the re-install was complete, the updates just processed normally. It isn't a great answer, but I know it will work.

It seems that re-installing windows allowed for the updates to properly configure, thanks!
