I recently got a new hard drive for my computer and am in need of assistance with transferring the files off of my old one to the new one.

I want to make the old one the back up while the new one would be the primary with all of the files and the OS. I've been searching all over the internet and have not found a reliable solution to my problem.

The specs are my current primary HD is a 1 TB and my new one is 2 TB.

Would I require a cable and connect the two drives together and go from there or would I have to clone the old one to the new one?

Solution
You could not "connect the drives together" as they cannot communicate without a controller to link them together. It would be best to connect them both to the same computer and then copy the files over. If you wish to completely clone the contents of the 1 TB to the 2 TB, go to the website of the 2 TB drive's manufacturer and get a copy of their free disk cloning software. If you just want to selectively copy files, you can copy and paste from the old to the new.
