Am I cpu bottlenecked?

Win 8.1 Pro

q9550 (stock Mhz) no oc quiet pc (custom h20)
8Gb Team xtreem ddr2 1600mhz
Gainward gtx 260 896mb
5tb various hdd space

Its time for a bit of a gpu upgrade but should I get a gtx770 or an r9 280x or an I wasting my money on an old p45 setup (gonna get a 256gb ssd aswell)

Yeah, you will need to upgrade the CPU in order to support a 770gtx or the 280x. Sadly, you are at the point of a new build. I had the same CPU about a month ago until I upgraded to a i5. It's not worth the cash to buy a better Core2Quad.

too much card for the cpu, yes......................... the 260 was a dog. if you have plans to buy a new platform in the next year or 2, go ahead and buy one of the gpu's listed. if not, a 2gig 7850/7870 will be more than you have cpu for. .......... been down this road............

Yeah an i5 is on the horizon later in 2014 but hey my gtx 260 was never a dog. So go I go nVidia or ATI(I'm old skool)?

That comes down to personal preference. Both have good cards that will play games very well.
