What things should I consider when picking out a motherboard for gaming? Say for example I'm going to be running an i7-4770K. I see Z87 boards ranging from $100 to over $500. Other than different features are there any differences or benefits that expensive boards have such as performance, or could I choose a cheaper board and use the money saved to get a higher end video card without any negative consequences?

You might want to rethink your question. Any recent i5 quad will play every game on the market in
any board you run it in. New haswell i3's will perform well enough.
You need a z board to overclock k chips, but its excessively expensive for a games machine.
