Hey Guys, Merry Christmas.

My brother is looking to upgrade his computer, he is running an old computer, still has IDE HDD lol, I helping him put something together instead of getting my old handy-me-downs.

PC is mostly going to be used to Surf the net, Netflix, Play music and World of Warcraft, This guy is on it all the time if hes not at work/school. Basically that's all he is going to use it for.

Basically the what i was looking at as for CPU is either the Intel Pentium G3220/G3420 (these two seem kinda hand to hand in performance but are ~$17 price difference) or an AMD Athlon X4 760k. He is looking to spend around $150 on CPU/Mobo. He will be pairing it with a GTX 550 ti he currently has till he can get around to getting something else.

What do you guys think would be the better of the two CPU? I do have a few aftermarket CPU coolers that will fit the AMD so OC'ing is something to consider with that CPU.

I was also looking at this bundle with an i3-4130 but it seems like dollar for dollar and OC potential the Athlon might fare better.

World of Warcraft is one of the most demanding games for the CPU. A good Intel FOUR-CORE CPU like the i5-4xxx is a good idea.

However, if this post is SOLELY about the best CPU and Motherboard for $150 then that's very difficult.

My advice is to get an AMD FX-6300 or FX4300 at this price point.

$175: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1515354

$150: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1515371

The Intel architecture is better but it only has TWO cores. The FX-4300 has four, and the FX-6300 has six. Newer games will also use more cores better.

I'll post this and see if I can find a WOW CPU benchmark.

The above link shows an AVERAGE. This should be pretty handy to you.

While the 2-core CPU (should be similar to the one you linked) is slightly ahead, this WILL CHANGE as time goes on. In particular, the new gaming consoles which use AMD 8-core CPU's (6 available for games) will encourage NEWER games and some MMO's to start supporting multiple cores better.

Basically there's a lot of potential in the 6-core FX-6300 waiting to be untapped but the Intel 2-core is about maxed out.

If you're looking for a cpu and mobo in that price range, you should probably go with an AMD CPU since their cpus have the best performance for money.

The Athlon X4 750k is cheaper, but has a better value at $80 compared to $90 (USD)

Thanks for your help, that graph was helpful, i think im am going to end up going with the FX-4130 (second link) Made sense with the whole dual core intel being "maxed" out by current standards.

Well, good luck.

There's no right answer here, just what's right for you. There are good cases to be made for either the 2-core Intel, 4-core AMD or 6-core AMD. Budget, choice of games/programs and how long you keep the PC also factor in.

The 2-core currently wins most games likely by a small margin, a couple more than that. The four and six-core CPU's will beat it in the near future in upcoming games, and the six-core will at some point be the best CPU.
