Hey guys, I recently gave my old rig to my nephew for a Christmas present but the Damn mobo gave in as luck would have it on Christmas day. Aarrgh!!

As it was an old 775 socket (Asus P5k Premium & Intel Q6600) it is I imagine hard to get another similar mobo. And tbh it probably needed an upgrade soon anyway. It also only held a max of 4gb ddr2 ram.

The only game he really plays is minecraft but sometimes also LoL & Dota 2.

Is there any cheap AMD budget combos which would serve him better than maybe paying similar money for a 775 second hand mobo? I would like to keep things cheap as possible so haven't really considered Intel at this point.

As he is 10 there are no premium features necessary such as overclocking, unlocked cpus etc. I just need the bare essentials to get him back up n running.

Thanks guys.

The FX-6300 is a good CPU to build a system around. It would be a huge jump up from what your running right now.
Keep in mind that upgrading your CPU and motherboard will require you upgrade your memory as well. You can find 4GB of DDR3 at a pretty reasonable price. Memory prices are just now starting to come down a bit.
Here is a couple of suggestions for a budget AMD board that you can plop an FX-6300 into....

Keep in mind that the budget AMD boards aren't the best for overclocking, but it doesn't sound like that was something you were interested in anyway.

Your video card sounds like it would be adequate...

It has an old Sapphire Radeon Hd4870 in there. Only 512mb but it does the job for what he'll need I reckon.

Your video card sounds like it would be adequate for the types of games that will be running on this PC.

One other option is to go with an FM2 CPU. AMD has a line of budget processors that lack an L3 cache so their performance isn't as good as their FX line, but its popular with budget gamers. Some of the FM2 CPUs have built in graphics processors. I'm not sure how they would compare to an HD 4870, but its an option if your looking for a low cost upgrade.
