Currently i am thinking of upgrading my CPU, my current specs are;
A8-3870k quadcore @ 3.5 GHz
XFX 7770
8GB DDR3 corsair vengeance

I was thinking about upgrading to a AMD FX 6300 then overclocking it to 4.5 GHz however is the Hex Core or even the 8 core CPUs worth it for games like Planetside?
Also is the the upgrade worth it for the £120 or so?

Solution

The FX-6300 is a fairly good CPU for the money, and should offer you decent performance in games. Would you like any advice on a CPU cooler to help you overclock?

In terms of the 8-core CPUs, they're just not worth it if you're planning on gaming. Most modern games only use 4 cores, so you won't see any improvement.

Thanks the the reply, i'm going to pick the 6300 tonight.
I already have a corsair H55 which does a good job so no need for a new watercooler. The only other thing i don't understand is the is the "760g, 990X" and so on which is found on motherboards. I thought only the AM3 and AM3+ was the type of socket.

Pairing an A8 with a 7770.What a genius. Wonder who gave you that advice.
I would suggest doing something sensible and rather than buying an fx 6300 sell your 7770 and get a 650ti boost or 7870.fx 6300 isnt going to magically increase your performance

Well i already had the A8 long before i bought the 7770,and as a GPU the A8 is crap. Also a lot of the stuff i do are Very CPU intensive so it makes sense to upgrade the CPU not the GPU.
