Re-installing Windows 7 on the same PC but to an SSD

Hey,

So I am pretty naive when it comes to PCs so looking for some help. So I currently have Windows 7 running on my PC but I am about to upgrade my PC and add in an SSD. I'm aware that you can not use the same activation key twice but I think you can if its on the same PC but I don't know how to go about it.

So I am going to install the OS onto the SSD and format my old HDD which should remove Windows 7 from that. I have the original Windows 7 install disc which came with my PC and the activation key so I am fine in that department.

Is it just as easy as formatting my HDD so it removes windows and re entering my activation key for it to be genuine or is there more to it.

Thanks in advance.

Hi

Theoretically it should be a simple job assuming you have either a manufacturers oem DVD or a retail DVD

I would disconnect the old hard drive while doing the installation

Then re install the motherboard chipset drivers, graphics drivers etc before going on the internet.
Next reconnect the old drive and hope you re start on the SSD,
If not this is a bios setting or which sata port the SSD is connected to
A disk connected to SATA

Port 0 should boot before port 1

As you are currently running Windows 7 and adding a SSD, you CAN use the same activation key. But, the easiest way to add a SSD is to clone your entire HDD onto the SSD. Most SSD's come with cloning software. Very easy to use. Once you clone your old HDD, Make sure you do not boot to the old HDD. Do this by setting the new SSD in the bios as your first boot drive. When you boot, make sure that the drive running the system is the correct one, then you can format your old HDD and be good to go. You could do the whole process in an hour.
