For a few months I've been mulling upgrading my aging DDR 2 / Phenom 945 rig. For the most part, I have been waiting for the next gen consoles to be released.

Strikingly, all the next gen consoles are 8 core jobbies. As such, would it be worth going for 8 an core based system, such as the enthusiast orientated AMD processors. Or would a solid, and powerful mid range quad core i5 (3350p) / (3470) intel still be able to handle the test of time. It's worth noting that the 3470 can pretty much waste any AMD 8 core processor out there at present in quad/single threaded operations anyway.

I just anticipate that quad cores are going to be antiquated, and newer engines and games are going to be primarily optimized for 8 core processors mitigating any quad core advantages we see at present?
